NYSC Uniform: Minister makes u-turn, says no decision on ‘replacing khaki with adire’

Minister on NYSC uniform

The Federal Government has clarified that Adire fabric has not been officially approved as a replacement for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) khaki uniform, contrary to earlier reports that suggested a final decision had been made.

Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, explained that Adire was merely one of several ideas being considered as part of ongoing reforms aimed at repositioning the NYSC scheme. He stressed that no final approval has been granted on any new uniform design or fabric.

In a statement posted on his official 𝕏 account yesterday, Olawande said reports claiming that the iconic khaki uniform had been replaced misrepresented comments he made during a recent interview on  television.

According to the Minister, both Adire and Ankara were mentioned only as examples of locally produced materials being discussed within broader reform consultations. He noted that the government is still evaluating various proposals and has not reached a definitive decision on the matter.

The clarification followed widespread public reactions after earlier reports quoted the minister as saying that Adire would replace the traditional khaki uniform as part of reforms recently approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

Olawande emphasised that the reform process remains ongoing, and that any eventual decision will be formally announced by the government.
